‘You never allow me tell my story. I been trying to tell it someone and nobody listenin’

Charming, flawed, and with the gift of the gab, we all know a man like August Henderson. Between his three kids, devoted wife-to-be, and part-ownership of a fruit and veg shop, he is proud of the life he has built since landing in his beloved West Bromwich.

So, when faced with deportation to a country he has no memory of, he isn’t prepared to go quietly. Listen up, he is ready to tell his own story.

Poignant and hilarious in equal measure, August in England gives insight into the lives impacted by the injustice of the Windrush scandal.

Written and performed by Lenny Henry in his playwriting debut, the celebrated actor and comedian brings his vast talents onto the stage in this intimate one-man show. Co-directed by the Bush Artistic Director, Lynette Linton (Sweat, House of Ife), and Associate Artistic Director, Daniel Bailey (Red Pitch, The High Table), August in England makes its world premiere in April 2023.

Funny, and had a point, brilliant the way lenny interacted with the audience

The show was great….small theatre so very intimate, heard everything clearly & could see facial expressions etc. easily…perfect location for a one man show.

Wendy Johnson

Absolutely a must see very entertaining

Giles Rabbetts

Great size of theatre - kept you fully involved for the full 90 minutes Really good music and acoustics Creatively put together - real insight into how a generation has been unjustly treated

Peteva Hurd

Lenny Henry was fabulous as a one-man show, very gripping, engaged everyone, one minute I was laughing, and the next minute I was sad as he bought issues to the surface.

Maggie Rodger

Amazing performance allowing you inside the life of the character, for the most part laughing, but eventually horrified by the events. We had known it as news, but this brought it to life. The option for a few minutes of quiet reflection at the end well judged - the emotion shame for my country.

Deanna

Absolutely incredible. A moving and touching performance that speaks straight to heart of what it means to be human. Best show in London!

Angela

Absolutely brilliant. Sir Lenny Henry is a genius. He engaged with the audience, every word was clear, he moved about the stage catching people’s eyes. He must be very fit to do all those moves and entertain and inform for 90 minutes on his own. Someone in the audience was so taken by the play they started calling out in support. Very moving

Lenny Henry's play about the life of a Jamaican immigrant and the impact of the Windrush scandal is both highly entertaining and seriously thought provoking. His one man show perfectly strikes that balance in the intimate space of the Holloway at the Bush Theatre. Just wish I had booked tickets direct as the venue doesn't charge booking fees, whereas London Theatre Direct fleece you for an additional 15%! Would rather have donated that amount to the theatre to enable them to continue to bring such groundbreaking plays to their stage.

Excellent acting. Cosy theatre. Good overall.

Sam

This couldn't have been more fabulous. The venue was perfect for this intimate show and Lenny Henry was phenomenal - learned about the impact of Windrush, laughed and cried. Wonderful evening out at the very best of British theatre - I really hope he can tour with this so others get the opportunity to see.
