It’s time to change the game.
The country that gave the world football has since delivered a painful pattern of loss. Why can’t England’s men win at their own game?
With the worst track record for penalties in the world, Gareth Southgate knows he needs to open his mind and face up to the years of hurt to take team and country back to the promised land.
Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale, The Mother) plays Gareth Southgate in this new play by James Graham (Best of Enemies, Sherwood). Following their acclaimed productions, Tammy Faye and Ink, he reunites with director Rupert Goold (Spring Awakening, Judy) for this gripping examination of both nation and game.
Special notes
Joseph Fiennes will not be performing on the following performances: Monday 16th October, Tuesday 17th October, Wednesday 20 December, Thursday 21 December, Friday 22 December (both shows).

Best play I’ve seen over the last year
1st class production, not keen on poky seats in the stalls
Highly recommend- great show!
I bought tickets for my husband for Christmas so not my thing really. He thought it charming and funny. He really enjoyed himself. I am not into football so a lot went over my head (no pun intended), but I enjoyed it still and learnt stuff too. Joseph Feines really had Gareth Southgate down to a T!
The story of Gareth Southgate and his journey as England manager. Clever production, made memorable by Fiennes’ brilliant portrayal of Southgate. I was slightly underwhelmed by the show mainly because of my high expectations based on its good reviews. But I’m glad I went.
Fabulous show evem though I am not a football fan myself! Enjoyed every minute
An amazing play that took me on a trip down memory lane. Thought provoking and so well staged. The characters were portrayed very well with lots of humour which I liked.
An amazing insight about the hidden world of football. Even though I know very little about the 'beautiful game', I loved the drama and the portrayal of the main characters and was made aware of the impact society and the media have on the well-being of the vulnerable players. Please say it will be touring or available through National Theatre Live to many more people?
Brilliant! Uplifting, fun and fairly true to the story. I highly recommend it.
Brilliant
The play was exceptional, thoroughly enjoyed it. However late comers unfortunately spoilt the first few minutes
Great show, very entertaining & engaging. Amazing cast. Front-row seat -- back of the stage not fully visible, but no major obstacle to enjoying the show.
